It Is believed that an Indian disciple of the Buddha, Batuo transmitted Zen from India to China in the early 6th century C.E. and most modern Zen lineages trace their past directly to this monk and the Shaolin Monastery where he taught.
In accordance with tradition, it was stated that he Discovered the monks in Shaolin too feeble to make satisfactory progress in their Spiritual Paths. So Batuo secluded himself in a cave for nine decades, emerging with a remedy (like Yoga) to the health issues of the Shaolin Monks and powerful practises to help their spiritual development.
